Clean Coal

This is a famous oxymoron. Even if coal can be made to burn cleaner than it does, it still destroys the world when it is mined. China has just pumped 7.5 billion dollars into a small Australian town to bring the coal from under that town to a seaport so that it can be burned in Chinese power plants. The population of this town will triple with the new jobs produced.

The town itself will probably become unlivable in a few decades. Look at what has happened to a large part of the state of West Virginia. Once pristine mountain streams are now dead and killing the rivers into which they flow. Ash retaining ponds at power plants are collapsing and destroying the nearby environments.

The insatiable demand for energy today is driving us to destroy the world that our children will inherit. This feels like the beginning of a bad “B” movie. Picture yourself walking in a barren landscape, trying to avoid deadly violent mutations looking for something to eat that won’t poison you. Science fiction….I doubt it.

As a refugee from a high-sulfur coal state, I'd be tickled if we could go back to the time 20 years ago when coal smokestacks were known to emit particles and needed "scrubbers" to remove the "stuff" that floats eastward with the weather and causes Acid Rain. Cap n Trade allows mfgr's to gradually reduce emissions and to do so, the EPA issued permits based on existing levels of output. Companies could then trade those permits and voila, a "free market" helped set the price for companies to abate their pollution. Sadly, the investment banking pioneers who ruled this market were in the World Trade Center on 9/11. Lazard lost 90% of it's employees and away went an industry-driven market that helped businesses reduce their pollution with some financial alternatives.

Sadly, now everyone gets wrapped around the axle over Global Warming. I saw the clear coat on my red car bubble off from the acid rain produced by the University's (EPA-exempt!) pollution machine at it's power generator in the middle of campus. YAY! :(

Queue the zombies, David!

Do you have any methods to prevent hackers?
